Software to Buy
There are hundreds of
thousands of computer programs and applications available, to
perform absolutely any task you can imagine using your
computer. Computer software refers to anything that is not
actually the "hardware," or the parts you can touch and see.
Software allows the hardware to function, by giving the
computer "directions" on what to do, and how to run. Operating
systems, video games, internet programs, and desktop publishing
applications are all examples of computer software.
You can find computer software
to buy, or you can even find some to download for free. Free
software, called "freeware" or "shareware," is often offered by
companies as an incentive to try their programs or as an
advertising method. Some freeware is created for specific tasks
by individuals.
Generally speaking, software
to buy is created by larger corporations. Because it is not
free, these companies must perform enough development and
testing to work out the "bugs," and ensure that the program
does what it is supposed to. Software to buy usually comes with
some form of technical support; again, this adds to the cost of
production, distribution, and maintenance. Often software to
buy comes with a license, allowing only the person that
purchased it to use it.
